The Florida Highwaymen were a group of African-American artists who made a living by selling their paintings from their cars in the 1950s. All 26 are members of the Florida Artists Hall of Fame. On North 15th Street in Fort Pierce you will find a tall obelisk dedicated to them. While their paintings originally sold for very small sums, many of them are sought by collectors today and are worth thousands
of dollars. The heritage begins at the Seven Gables House, in downtown Fort Pierce. The second stop is the former home of their mentor, A.E. “Bean” Backus, a Florida Artists Hall of Fame landscape painter. The trail has 10 stops with information about the significance of each.
