St. Lucie County Regional History Center
Overlooking the magnificent Indian River in Museum Point Park, the Regional History Center offers a glimpse at the foundation of St. Lucie’s community. From our earliest known residents, the Ais Indians to the Creek and later the Seminoles, you can see their lifestyle in the artifacts and displays. Trace the rise of the fishing industry and the failed efforts at making St. Lucie the “Pineapple Capital of the World.” Go shopping in Cobb’s General Store or take a walk down Main Street, past the doctor’s office and the printing press. Step back into the 1900’s with a tour of the fully furnished Gardner House.
National Navy UDT-SEAL Museum
Visiting the National Navy UDT-SEAL Museum is a must-see, first day attraction in St. Lucie. The museum is actually located near the original site of where the Navy SEALs (Frogmen) first trained during WWII. Dive into the secret world of these legendary warriors and explore the history of their maritime special operations. With amazing exhibits, real artifacts and a new Navy SEAL obstacle course, this museum is unlike any other – it’s the one and only in the world.
Old Fort Park
Listed on the U.S. Register of Historic Places, Old Fort Park on Indian River Drive in Fort Pierce is the site of a military installation that was constructed in 1838 by the US Army during the Second Seminole War. Fort Pierce is named after the first commander of this installation, Benjamin Kendrick Pierce. The site offers a beautiful view of the Indian River Lagoon and also features an ancient burial mound of the Ais Indian tribe.
Spruce Bluff Preserve
Spruce Bluff Preserve: Once the site of an early pioneer settlement and cemetery along the banks of the St. Lucie River, this 97-acre nature preserve features two self-guiding interpretive trails. One loop trail describes the site of the 1891 pioneer settlement that consisted of a community of several families with a school, post office and sawmill. The other trail describes the significance of an early Native American mound and historic uses of native plants found along the trail. Adventurers will also discover great birding opportunities, a kayak/canoe access point and nature observation areas.
